Curing Blindness with Botox®

Press ReleasesNewport Beach, CA, September 21, 2005 One World Sight Project (OWSP) Founder Richard Weiss, MD, announced today that the fundraising efforts during the month of August resulted in contributions to cure 132 people on two continents of needless blindness due to cataracts. Orange County patrons helped OWSP sponsor the Seva Foundation and the International Eye Foundation with surgical teams who traveled to Tanzania and Tibet to perform surgery over the summer. Richard Weiss, MD held a BOTOX-A-THON in his practice on August 18th and injected patients with Botox® Cosmetic product generously donated by Allergan Inc. In return, customers donated enough to cure 2 people each of blindness. A second fundraising event was held August 27th at Newport Dunes with a live auction, dinner and entertainment. According to Dr. Weiss "We really exceeded our goal which was to cure blindness in 70 people with this campaign. We were able to double what we planned to accomplish due to the generosity of the people of Orange County."

There are approximately 50 million cases of blindness in the world today. Approximately 80% could be permanently cured by a simple operation that can sometimes be performed in less than 20 minutes. There are an additional 1-1.5 million cases of new blindness developing each year. Despite the best efforts of the world's eye care organizations, at current funding levels; the world is slowly becoming more blind. Without major public health measures in developing countries, the number of blind people in the world will double in the next five years.

Ongoing donations are accepted. Each $50 donation will cure a person of blindness. Make checks payable to One World Sight Project Inc. a 501C tax deductible charity. Check should be mailed to Weiss Cosmetic & Laser Vision Procedures, 360 San Miguel Road, Suite 403, Newport Beach, CA 92660. More information on the One World Sight Project is available at www.owsp.org, and www.drweiss.com.
