Newport Beach, CA – Richard A. Weiss, M.D.’s remarkable story, The Gift of Sight, is part of the newest edition of the best-selling “Chicken Soup for the Soul” series, “Chicken Soup for the Traveler’s Soul.” This moving story of giving a 9-year-old girl the ability to see also inspired Weiss to reach out and help cure blindness by founding a non-profit organization dedicated to relieving cataract blindness worldwide.
The Gift of Sight, which takes place in Haiti, opens our eyes to their society’s impoverished condition and it’s people’s desperate need of medical attention. For several months Dr. Weiss worked long hours, under extreme conditions in order to see men, women and children waiting in line all day until each patient was treated. He tells in detail of his rewarding experience performing eye surgery and examinations for the poor in downtown Port-au-Prince and at an outreach clinic in the small village of Leogane.
Dr. Weiss founded One World Sight Project, Inc., a non-profit organization, in 1988 with the help of Special Advisor, Stevie Wonder. By focusing world resources on the problem of preventable and curable blindness in underdeveloped countries, One World Sight Project is working to bring sight to the 25 million people who are needlessly blind and could be cured with a single $25, twenty-minute procedure.
A portion of the book’s proceeds will be donated to the One World Sight Project as well as the International Institute for Peace Through Tourism, The Peace Corps Writers, and The National Federation of the Blind.
The book is the latest in the best-selling Chicken Soup for the Soul series, which has sold over 65 million copies worldwide since 1993. Dr. Weiss’s story was one of more than 8,000 considered for inclusion in the book. Other contributors to Chicken Soup for the Traveler’s Soul range from first-time authors to such writers as James A. Michener, Maya Angelou, and Charles Kuralt.
Dr. Weiss, Medical Director of Weiss Cosmetic and Laser Vision Procedures, has been practicing in southern California since 1986 and has offices in Los Angeles and Newport Beach. His office has been designated a National Training Center for Cosmetic Botox treatments. Dr. Weiss received an undergraduate degree at New York University, a medical degree at Temple University School of Medicine and went on to complete an ophthalmology residency at Georgetown University.
He has taken special fellowship training in ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of Toronto, one of only twenty training positions available in this field yearly in North America. In 1995, Dr. Weiss traveled to South Africa to perform a complex reconstructive eyelid procedure for then-President Nelson Mandela.
Dr. Weiss has also donated a portion of the proceeds from his recent invention (the Weiss Vertexometer, available from OASIS Medical, www.oasismedical.com) used for increasing the accuracy of LASIK laser vision correction to the One World Sight Project to cure treatable blindness due to cataracts.
